Chute clogs happen when wet, heavy snow sticks to the inside of the chute instead of exiting. Prevention: (1) spray the inside of the chute and auger housing with silicone spray or non-stick cooking spray before each use, (2) clear at full throttle — low RPM throws more slowly and encourages clogs, (3) in wet snow (28-32°F range), take narrower passes to keep snow volume down. If the chute does clog, ALWAYS shut off the engine (gas) or remove the battery (cordless) before clearing it with the clean-out tool — never your hands, even with the machine off, because auger tension can release suddenly.
Can a snow blower handle wet, heavy snow?
Two-stage blowers with metal serrated augers (Ariens, EGO, Toro) handle wet snow well in our testing. The Ariens cleared 10 inches of wet snow without a single clog. Single-stage blowers with rubber augers (Greenworks, Snow Joe) struggle significantly — the rubber loses grip on slushy snow, the chute clogs repeatedly, and runtime drops due to the higher torque demand. If your region's typical snowfall is the heavy wet "heart attack snow" common in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, a two-stage model is worth the premium.
What maintenance does a snow blower need?
Gas models need: fresh fuel with stabilizer each season, oil change annually, spark plug check/replacement every 2-3 seasons, auger shear pin inspection, chute lubrication with silicone spray, and belt tension check. Off-season: drain fuel or fill with stabilized fuel, run the carburetor dry, fog the cylinder with oil. Battery models need: none of the above. Just clean the housing, check the auger for debris, and store batteries indoors at room temperature. This maintenance difference is, in our view, the single strongest argument for going cordless in 2026.
