Qi2 vs MagSafe Charger: Which Should You Buy?
By The Gear Audit Team · Manufacturer specification research checked October 10, 2026.
Quick answer: check the exact charger and phone
For an iPhone, either a suitable Qi2 charger or Apple’s current MagSafe Charger can be a sensible buy. Qi2 is a wireless charging standard; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system. They overlap: Apple’s current charger is also certified for Qi2 25W. Choose by your phone’s supported power, the included adapter and how you want to hold or position the phone. A magnetic attachment or a familiar name alone does not establish fast charging.
Qi2 and MagSafe describe different things
The Wireless Power Consortium manages Qi certification. Its original Qi2 generation offered 15W; Qi2 25W, based on version 2.2.1, arrived in July 2025. The magnetic alignment system helps position the phone on the charging coil. Look for the actual certification and power class instead of treating every magnetic accessory as equivalent. WPC explains the standard and certification.
Apple’s current MagSafe Charger supports Qi2 25W as well as Qi. Consequently, the useful comparison is between complete products and supported phone combinations. An older MagSafe puck and a newer one may share the name while offering different capabilities.
“MagSafe compatible” needs a closer look. If a listing describes magnetic fit, ask separately whether the exact charger is Qi2 certified, whether it is a 15W or 25W product, and whether your phone can use that mode. WPC also defines Qi2 Ready combinations involving a phone and a suitable accessory; a magnetic case should not be assumed to upgrade a phone’s supported charging power. WPC’s Qi2 Ready announcement explains this combination approach.
Which choice fits your routine?
| Your situation | Our buying direction | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a suitable USB-C adapter and want a simple iPhone puck | Apple’s current MagSafe Charger is a straightforward option. | Charger generation, cable length and the adapter’s output profile. |
| You want a phone support and adapter in one purchase | A certified Qi2 bundle with a kickstand can be more convenient. | The selected SKU actually includes the power supply. |
| You have an older iPhone and mainly charge overnight | Keep a working compatible charger unless its fit or cable is inconvenient. | A higher charger rating does not raise the phone’s limit. |
| You use Android or plan to switch platforms | Start with the phone maker’s supported Qi2 or Qi2 Ready setup. | Exact phone, case and charger compatibility; no blanket 25W assumption. |
| You need a watch and earbuds charged beside the phone | Compare a dedicated multi-device station. | Separate watch support, adapter sharing and travel size. |
For that last scenario, our wireless charger guide for home and travel covers different station formats. The two examples below focus on one phone.
What does 25W mean for your iPhone?
It is a peak capability, not a constant charging rate. Apple’s current MagSafe support instructions require a compatible newer puck and a 30W-or-greater adapter offering at least 15V/2A for the higher-power mode. Selected examples from that guidance:
- Up to 25W: iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 17/17 Pro/17 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Plus and 16 Pro Max.
- Different limits: iPhone 16 and 16 Pro reach 22.5W; iPhone Air reaches 20W.
Those are Apple’s MagSafe conditions, not a promise for every third-party pad. With a Qi2 product, verify its specific phone and software requirements. A compatibility list can establish that a phone works without establishing the same speed for every model.
If you are reusing a multiport adapter, inspect the output available from the selected USB-C port. Our 65W vs 100W USB-C charger guide explains why a charger’s total rating and its per-port allocation matter. Buying a larger adapter solely to exceed the puck’s supported ceiling adds no stated wireless power benefit.
Two exact charger examples
| Product compared | Cable and bundle | Our reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Apple MagSafe Charger, 2m, MGDM4LL/A | Integrated 2m USB-C cable; adapter separate | Simple puck for an existing compatible power setup |
| Belkin UltraCharge, black round form, WIA014ttBK | Integrated 2m cable; selected bundle includes 36W USB-C supply | Built-in kickstand and a complete power bundle |
Apple MagSafe Charger, 2m — MGDM4LL/A
Best fit: an iPhone owner who wants a simple puck and already has a suitable adapter.
Pros
- Current Qi2 25W certification avoids choosing an older generation solely by its MagSafe name.
- The 2m version gives more cable reach than the separately offered 1m option.
- A simple puck suits someone who already owns the power adapter and preferred phone support.
Cons
- The wall adapter is separate, so include it when comparing the complete purchase.
- There is no integrated kickstand; upright viewing requires another support.
- The attached cable cannot be swapped for another length as a separate cable.
Our recommendation
Choose this version for its simple format and longer reach. Choose a bundled stand instead if you are starting from nothing or want the phone propped up. Do not replace a satisfactory older setup just because this puck carries a higher number.
Configuration and certification: Apple’s selected 2m product page. Phone and adapter conditions: Apple Support.

Belkin UltraCharge — WIA014ttBK, black round form
Best fit: someone who wants the phone supported while charging.

Pros
- The integrated kickstand supports viewing without a separate stand.
- The selected US bundle includes a 36W USB-C supply.
- WPC independently lists WIA014 as a Qi2 25W certified transmitter.
Cons
- The stand adds hardware if you only want a flat puck.
- The tethered cable cannot be independently exchanged.
- Its 25W ceiling still depends on the phone; older devices gain no guaranteed speed upgrade.
Our recommendation
Choose this bundle when the stand solves a daily need. Keep the exact round-form SKU and adapter inclusion in view when comparing listings; the square-form product is a different selection.
Belkin’s selected SKU and box contents; WPC certification QI-24043.

Before you order
- Match the exact phone and software. Record the supported wireless mode before choosing a charger’s power class.
- Check the product generation. Read certification and model information, not only “magnetic” or “MagSafe compatible.”
- Price the whole setup. Include the required adapter and any separate phone support. Verify the box contents for the seller’s exact variant.
- Plan the physical fit. Check cable reach, your case and the space where the phone will rest. A stand only earns its place if you use it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Qi2 faster than MagSafe?
The label alone does not answer that. Qi2 includes 15W and 25W products, and Apple’s current MagSafe Charger is also Qi2 25W certified. Compare the actual phone, charger generation and power supply.
Does a magnetic case make any phone Qi2 compatible?
No. Magnetic fit and supported charging are separate checks. For Qi2 Ready, verify the documented phone-and-accessory combination rather than assuming an aftermarket ring establishes certification.
Should I replace a working 15W charger?
We would first identify a practical problem: charging time during short breaks, inadequate reach or awkward viewing. If your routine already works, a newer rating alone is a weak reason to replace it.
Will a 100W adapter make a 25W puck charge faster?
It cannot increase the puck’s stated ceiling. Use the required USB-C output profile and check port sharing; a sufficient dedicated adapter is a more useful target than the largest total wattage.
Research method and sources
This is a specification-based buying comparison, researched October 10, 2026. We checked manufacturer configurations, Apple’s current charging conditions and WPC certification information. Recommendations about format and bundle value are editorial judgments. We did not conduct hands-on charging, temperature or durability tests, and do not promise a charge time.
